Alexis has been accepted into a “Baccalauréat en science commerciales spécialisé en comptabilité (coop)” at Ottawa University. Good luck in your studies, Alexis! The 2017 Canadian Military Police Association Scholarship competition was announced on 30 April 2017, and closed on 31 July 2017. A committee of three members, representing a cross section of the Association, was convened to review and grade the applications in order to determine the winners. Among the criteria that were considered in assessing points are academic performance and potential; community involvement; financial need; and quality of the essay. This year, the applications were reviewed by Maj Steeve Gregoire, CWO Crystal Krammer, and Sgt(Ret’d) Kaven Daigle. The winner of the University Scholarship was Alexis Raymond, son of CWO(Ret’d) Serge Raymond. Alexis has demonstrated outstanding academic performance and has been active with his school community and sports programs. 24 June 1996 The 3rd annual Thunderbird Challenge competition commenced at 17 Wing Winnipeg. MP from all Air Command bases competed in several combat-themed events over the course of 4 days.
Thunderbird Challenge was an annual event that ran from 1993 - 1999 in Winnipeg. Over the years, MP from across the Branch competed against each other in pistol, rifle, and physical fitness events. Not only did this event demonstrate the capabilities of our members, it forged lasting bonds of camaraderie and esprit de corps. Although Thunderbird Challenge came to an end in 1999, a special one-time only version of the competition was held in Ottawa in 2015 as part of the MP Branch's 75th Anniversary. June 1946 Changes are made to the King’s Rules and Regulations to ensure the collective jurisdiction of all the service Policing groups over members of the Canadian Army, RCN, and RCAF. Before this change was made, Military Police from the three services faced a variety of complex jurisdictional restrictions when dealing with persons from outside their services.
(Note: This post constitutes our final "Legend of the Thunderbird") “Once, there was a sea monster which greatly troubled the Nootka, for it would wait at the mouth of the river for children to swim when it would catch and eat them. The Nootka did not know what to do for their children had to learn to swim if they were to catch Whale. So they asked Thunderbird and he told them to make belts of the whale skin and put it on a brave child. This child had then to swim out towards the sea monster and when he was swallowed, to shout “snake in belly” when the belt would kill the sea monster. “For” said Thunderbird, “I have turned the magic of the double-headed serpent into the skin of the whale and it shall turn the poison against the sea monster”. From that day on, the children of this child that slew the sea monster bore the crest of Thunderbird upon their canoes and his image shows where the shores are safe to the Nootka, to this day”.

Updated...this time with a link to the documents... The CMPA’s Scholarship Fund reflects one of our main purposes: to support and benefit its members. Each year, the CMPA awards two $1,000 scholarship to members in good standing whose family members (spouse or children) are pursuing their first year of full or part time post-secondary education. One scholarship will be presented for entry into a university program, and one for entry into a college program. The attached documents provide full details regarding the rules and application process. Deadline for submission is 30 July 2017. No extensions will be granted. Email your submission packages to cmpa.apmc@gmail.com Good luck to all future applicants!
Not a day goes by that we don't get a question about "retirement badges". There's a lot of confusion out there, some of it of our own making due to confusing policies and mixed messages over the years. To be clear, the CMPA offers two seperate gifts to CMPA members that are releasing or retiring: the CMPA Departure Gift and the MP Retirement Credentials. We’ve received a lot of feedback from members about the current retirement credentials program...concerns that the application process was overly complex, that it was excessively expensive for retired members…and some excellent suggestions were put forward to us for consideration. As a result, we’re making a lot of fundamental changes to the Retirement Badge program. First, the application process is going to be significantly streamlined to eliminate a lot of the bureaucracy, including the elimination of the role of the chain of command. There will still be a review conducted to ensure the applicant meets all eligibility requirements, but the initial request no longer needs to be staffed through your chain of command when you retire. You’ll have enough to do without a lot of extra paperwork. You no longer have to purchase a 5-year membership to obtain the retirement credentials. So long as you have an existing CMPA membership that’s in good standing and meet the other basic requirements (not have your MP credentials under suspension, not be dishonorably released, etc.), the retirement credentials will now essentially be a “kit shop purchase” and all you’ll be required to pay is a one-time fee for the badge, ID card, and wallet. You will no longer have to maintain a continuous CMPA membership after you retire in order to keep the retirement credentials. This was a particularly big bone of contention, and it’s now been eliminated. If you are in possession of retirement credentials that are expired or about to expire, you don’t have to “renew” them. We are reworking the design of the ID card to eliminate the expiry date. If you want to replace your ID card if its been damaged or you want to update the photo, you’ll only have to pay a modest fee to cover production and shipping While we are making some changes to better serve our retired members, one thing that won’t be changing is the fundamental criteria for qualification: you must be retired (or in the process of retiring) to obtain the retirement credentials. In other words, you’ve must have completed your Terms of Service and be receiving a pension for that service. If you’ve been medically released as a result of an injury sustained on duty and are receiving a medical pension for that injury you also qualify for retirement credentials. However, personnel who release from the CAF without receiving a pension will not be considered to be “retired” and will not be eligible for retirement credentials. However, every member of the CMPA who releases or retires will still be entitled to the CMPA Departure Gift (formerly called the “retirement gift”…which created a great deal of confusion as you might imagine). The Departure Gift is your actual MP badge that you carried on duty, encased in a shadow box. We’re also making a few minor changes to Bylaw #5, which governs the CMPA Departure Gift program, and we’ll be announcing those changes soon. In the days and weeks to come, we’ll be publishing an updated Bylaw #6 that governs the retirement credentials, as well as a new application process. Speaking of paperwork on retirement, we are going to be producing a CMPA aide-memoire for inclusion in the DWD handbook to ensure that Departure gifts and retirement credentials every MP who releases or retires.
“When the Sun has his longest trail to cover, then must we consider what we must do to prepare to put out to sea and hunt whale. At these times do we rejoice as sons of Thunderbird, that we can come together and talk of these things and seek his counsel. For he is wise and has hunted whale since before the world began and is able to kill the double-headed serpent who can turn canoes to stone so that they sink. Then at the end of this counsel shall be a great Potlatch and a great giving of gifts and shall each chief give all his substance so that none invited are offended by a small gift. For from the wisdom of Thunderbird, shall we go out on the great waters and bring back whale, whose skin shall be made into a belt and whose flesh shall make us rich and whose bone shall be our treasure”.

“The Mink is the son of the Sun and lives at Qalogwis. He is foolish, amorous and full of curiosity. He killed his friend Land Otter because he coveted his wife and Frog-Woman disliked him because he has a long face, small eyes and smells. He is very greedy and fond of sea eggs. He steals clams from the houses of the women by the shore and when they complain, he turns them into starfish. Yes, Mink is greedy and covetous, but most of all he is foolish. One day he thought he would carry the Sun in his father’s place. So, arising early and before his father, he took the shining ball out to make the day, but he could not carry it and dropped it on the earth between Bella-Bella and Bella Coola where it set the forests on fire. Then were all men and animals greatly afraid for they thought the whole world would burn. They called out to Thunderbird who sent Tsona, his cousin. He put on his magic garment and there was thunder, lightning and a great hailstorm which out the fire. Even today, when the forests burn, Thunderbird will protect his people and spread his cloak and bring the rain. For his cloak is the clouds, which bring the rain in season”.

By CWO Crystal Krammer, CFMPA CWO Greetings from your CFMPASince our last submission in December, the members of the CFMPA enjoyed a nice long Christmas break and returned to their duties refreshed and ready for the commencement of another busy period. 10 Jan 2017, saw the intake of the new QL3 and MPOC courses. Our newest members quickly started to find their step under the helpful guidance of their staff members. As stated in our last submission we introduced the concept of both courses being mentored by a MP veteran, and we are happy to announce that Sgt (Retired) Ken Neilson is mentoring the QL3 platoon, which is now called “Neilson platoon”, and LCol (Retired) Paul Thobo-Carlsen (one of the CMPA's two Directors of History and Heritage) is mentoring the MPOC platoon, which is now the “Thobo-Carlsen platoon”. Both veterans proudly accepted the roles and challenge, and we are extremely excited to see how this relationship will unfold. The Academy staff and students welcome both of these extraordinary mentors to the team. Bell Let's Talk Day25 Jan 2017 was Bell Let’s Talk Day - Leveraging the technology available in the Colonel Stone Building, Canadian Forces Military Police Academy (CFMPA) staff and students were able to listen in to the CAF, Bell Let's Talk Panel discussion held at NDHQ on January 25, 2017. CFMPA is committed to helping the members of the CF MP Gp build their resiliency skills through the continued instruction and development of the Road to Mental Readiness for MP. The End of an EraDemolition has begun on the old CFMPA lines in Borden. Moving forward! What’s Upcoming? Our pace at the Academy is quickly picking up momentum. Within the next few days we will be preparing for the QL5 graduation which will see 27 MP members proudly accept their certificates and new qualification on 10 Feb 2017, and return to their units to start mentoring those newer members; and of course happily commencing the paperwork to start receiving their specialist pay.
20 Feb 2017, will see the kick off of our 6B course, this is an exciting course as we get to see our future Branch Leaders sitting in our class rooms, ready and eager to make changes for the better. We as staff learn just as much from these folks as they do from us. The Academy CWO will be calling to order an Academy History Board which will meet quarterly to discuss history projects and work on the capturing and sharing CFMPA and Branch History. Sgt Beswick (the other half of the CMPA's History and Heritage team) will be the President and we will be looking for two veterans who would be interested in joining our team, and contribute to this new initiative. If you feel that this is something that you are interested in, please forward your name to the Academy CWO through one of the following reps: John Corbett; Wayne Kendell; Bob Thomas; or; Bob Smith. This captures all that is going on at your CFMPA, the Home of The Branch! Until next time, Securitas We've received several private messages today regarding someone allegedly wearing an RCAF uniform with Military Police accoutrements and medals that he's not entitled too. While it's not within the CMPA's mandate to investigate allegations of this nature, it is in our mandate to support the interests of the men and women who have proudly served in the red beret in peace and war. As such, this information will be relayed to the appropriate investigative authorities for further action. There has already been enough commenting on other Facebook sites regarding this person's actions and motivations, so I don't expect to see the same thing posted here. We've been alerted and we're dealing with it. A reminder that inappropriate comments will be deleted...let's keep things civil and let the investigation sort itself out.
