CMPA Director of History & Heritage LCol (Ret'd) Paul Thobo-Carlsen presents a cheque to NAFMC Curator Laura Imrie while NAFMC Executive Director Kevin Windsor and CMPA Veterans' Membership Rep Maj (Ret'd) Wayne Kendall look on. On 8 July 2019, the CMPA presented a $5000 cheque to the National Air Force Museum of Canada (Trenton ON) to assist in building a permanent exhibit to explain the important role played by Air Force Police and Military Police in securing the nuclear weapons used by Canada’s air force during the Cold War. This money, combined with other private and corporate donations, will be used to create and maintain a high quality display at this publicly accessible museum. Phase 1 of the exhibit, planned for completion in the next 12 months, will focus on the sentry dog program at Canada’s air bases in Germany (1963 to 1972) and will feature an AFP sentry dog/handler display (full size mannequins and backdrop depicting a nuclear-armed CF-104 fighter-bomber in an alert area), along with accompanying storyboards and artifact display cases. Phase 2, to commence once the museum’s new expansion annex is completed in approximately 3-4 years, will see the display moved to the planned Cold War section and enlarged to showcase the various roles played by AFPs and MPs in securing other RCAF/CAF nuclear weapon systems, including the BOMARC surface-to-air missiles and Genie air-to-air rockets deployed in Canada under the NORAD umbrella. The National Air Force Museum of Canada has established a specific trust fund to collect the remaining money necessary to complete and maintain the AFP/MP exhibit, and donors will be provided charitable donation receipts for income tax purposes. Donations to the trust fund may be made by cheque to the “National Air Force Museum of Canada.” Please ensure all cheques are clearly annotated with “Attn: Air Force Police Exhibit Trust Fund” to ensure they are appropriately directed. Donation cheques should be mailed to: Executive Director National Air Force Museum of Canada 220 RCAF Road Astra, ON K0K 3W0 Any former AFP or MP sentry dog handlers who wish to donate related artifacts in support of this exhibit should contact the CMPA (cmpahistory@gmail.com) with the details of items for consideration. Any artifacts subsequently accepted into the NAFMC collection will also be eligible for income tax receipts.
Message from LCol Dan Dandurand I am seeking your support for a major event taking place in Ontario. Our hope is to raise a significant amount of funds in order to purchase much needed equipment for adaptive sports. Specifically, we want to be able to equip Team Canada for the 2020 Invictus Games and 2020 Warrior Games. I have recently taken part in the 2019 Warrior Games and can personally attest to the transformative power of adaptive sports for ill and injured soldiers. Please note; you do not have to be present to win and you can also make donations which we will be happy to provide a tax receipt (for donations above 10.00). Attached are posters and you can also take a look at my article which was published in the Maple Leaf, a Canadian Armed Forces newspaper. https://ml-fd.caf-fac.ca/en/2019/07/32254 Your support is much needed and even more appreciated. Please buy tickets, donate, volunteer, participate and share. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Together we can make a huge difference in the lives of our ill and injured. Dan In the Internet era it is easy to forget that newspapers were once a primary means of reaching potential military recruits. A scan of Canadian newspapers from 1940 to 1968 reveals a surprisingly large number of ads seeking service police members for the three pre-unification armed services. Read the full article and view these historical recruiting ads.

Your continued support and engagement in events such as this will continue to contribute to the “esprit de corps” of the Military Police family. Much thanks to the CMPA for stepping forward. Military Police Branch badge – 1999 to present The following article was received from Cpl Michael Smith, MPU Esquimalt, BC It’s a new year for Tour de Rock, with Military Police members being selected as part of the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock team. This year’s team is made up of 13 Police Officers, 3 Firefighters, 2 Paramedics and 2 guest riders from 17 different Vancouver Island departments and 1 media rider from Victoria, British Columbia. The Tour de Rock is a two-week bicycle journey in which a team of police officers rides more than 1,000 kilometres from the north end of Vancouver Island to the south, raising money to fight childhood cancer through research funding while providing the opportunity for kids to attend Camp Goodtimes. Camp Goodtimes provides a safety-focused, medically supervised, fun and recreational experience for children with cancer and their families. This year’s ride takes place September 21st to October 4th, but the team has been actively training since March in order to prepare for the long endurance, highly emotional, and well publicized event. Training consists of three days a week: Tuesdays are hill nights, Thursdays are speed nights, and Sundays are the long-distance training rides. Money is raised throughout the year by 27 communities that are all visited by the Tour de Rock Team during the big ride. As participants, all team members are also expected to raise a minimum of $5000 which is money that goes directly to helping fight childhood cancer through support programs such as Camp Goodtimes. Last year’s team was able to raise in excess of $1,300,000 and since 1997 Tour de Rock has raised over $25,000,000. Throughout the training and community events that members are involved in over the duration of the seven months, it also provides a great opportunity for liaising with other law enforcement agencies as well as building stronger relationships within the communities that the MP live and work in while supporting such a great cause. It is a particularly special year in that there is representation from two different MP Units which assists in educating people outside of the MP Branch about the diversity that CFMP provides on a day to day basis. More information on the Tour de Rock can be found at: www.tourderock.ca
Fundraising information and training activities of the MP riders can be followed on social media at: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TourdeRockmichaelsmith Instagram: Tourderockmichael Twitter: @tourderockmich1 Since 1939, Canadian Provost and Military Police units have generally made do with light, soft-skinned vehicles to provide mobility in support of field operations – the motorcycle, Jeep, Iltis and G-Wagon being the most ubiquitous examples. During ISAF operations in Afghanistan, to help counter the ever-present ballistic and explosive threats, Canadian Military Police units did make limited use of RG-31 armoured patrol vehicles while conducting certain types of tactical operations. Presently, some Military Police field platoons are adopting the Canadian Army’s new TAPV (Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicle).
Interestingly, the first known use of armoured vehicles by Canadian Military Police was not in Afghanistan, but in Germany at the end of the Second World War. Read more about these CProC armoured vehicles and see more photos here. La version française suit l'anglais

Below is an update on the Island MP Reunion from Carl Greetings to all our members who have advised they are considering coming to the 2019 reunion. Our ISLAND MP’S are once more inviting all our veteran MP’s to come join us this July on Prince Edward Island. Many of those who attended the 2014 reunion are coming back and we have many new ones on our list. In 2014 we had 284 and as of today, in only a few weeks, we already have 215 so very little doubt we will surpass 2014. A wonderful time to see so many of our comrades and wives some that we haven’t seen for many years. We (ISLAND MP’S) as in 2014 have lots of activities planned, more details will follow as our Island MP’s get together and make this event bigger and better. ATTENDEE LIST I have attached the attendee list, for the most part I think that I have the information correct, but call upon you to advise me of any errors. Other than the name of the member and their wife/guests I don’t need anything more until I send out the registration forms and fees. I do however, need the name of your wife/husband or guest that is not on my list, names are necessary to give me the correct count of who is coming. So please let me know ASAP. The names on this list are sure to bring back lots of memories. ACCOMMODATION I have attached the accommodation list and the host hotels that area sponsoring this reunion. Also on this attachment are the addressed for PEI tourism that will give you lots more information and activities on the Island during your stay. Many that come to the reunion make it a holiday, why not, if you come from afar extend your holiday and enjoy our Island lots to do lots to see. The Island is surrounded by beached and many gold courses, deep sea fishing and much much more. REUNION POSTER The poster will give you a overview of the schedule of events, more details will follow as we negotiate prices for all the activities and food/beverage services. Once this is ratified we will be sending out the registration forms and fees to be sent in. We will also have a cut off date in case of cancellations and we will refund. We will also be asking for T-Shirt sizes and selection of meal choices. Danny Goss will be coordinating a round of golf, more details to follow. We will also have a Island M/C ride and hopefully once more a boat ride to the Confederation Bridge. Anything else please let me know. Looking forward to another great reunion Carl and the ISLAND MP’S

Trudeau Brigadier-général GPFC Military Police personnel who served between the 1960s and 1990s will almost certainly remember the satirical and sometimes risqué cartoons of Sergeant Doug Scott (Retired), best known by his signature name Scotty. Many younger MP Branch members may be unfamiliar with this talented artist whose illustrations often featured military police themes. Read the full story about Scotty and view his cartoons here. Image adapted from the cover artwork of the Scotty Cartoons book published in 1974 to support the Military Police Fund for Blind Children. Used with the kind permission of Doug Scott. Info received from Carl
GREETINGS ALL: I have received numerous calls/emails regarding the possibility of another MP Veterans reunion here in Summerside. The ISLAND MP’S once more will consider this great event to be held here July 25-28 2019. The last reunion held here in 2014 was a major success with 281 in attendance. For those of you who were here in 2014 I’m sure the memories are still with you. For most of us retired MP’S our friends from our past service are seldom in our lives as most live miles apart, A REUNION IS THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET AND SOCIALIZE WITH OUR BUDDIES THAT WE HAVE NOT HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE WITH FOR SO MANY YEARS. Also, a great opportunity for our wives to meet, as with us serving members our wives were always at our side and made many friends over the years. In order to plan such a reunion, accommodations, venue and funding are needed but above all need attendees. The venue, same as 2014 has been secured as well as accommodations at the Loyalist Country Inn and the Quality Inn, all tentative of course, at this date. NOTICE ONLY: All I need at this point is a note from those who would consider attending, once we get sufficient numbers to confirm the event we will go out to all with the details and registration. Thus far without any notice I have 30 on the list. You will probably receive a number of notices from various systems so I apologize in advance but this is necessary to ensure we reach as many retired: CProC; AFP and MP’s as possible. A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. Carl From the CFMPA RSM,

We have learned that the wording “RETIRE” or RETIREE was used on both the badges and ID Cards issued to some members. The proper wording should be RETRAITE or RETRAITEE. If you are in possession of one of the improperly worded badges and/or ID card and you would like a replacement, please mail them to the following address CMPA/ MP Kit shop Credentials Coordinator PO Box 712 Winchester ON K0C 2K0 Ensure to include your full return address. If you require a new Retired ID Card also, please send a photo to cmpadeparturegift@gmail.com. Once received a new badge and/or ID card will be issued to you at no charge.
