In May 2024, a week-long Cultural, Educational, and Battlefield Tour was organized in Italy to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Italian Campaign during the Second World War. Led by Colonel (retired) Tony Battista and supported by the Canadian Military Police Association (CMPA), the tour paid special tribute to Captain Tony Scotti and his No. 5 Company of the Canadian Provost Corps (CProC). This heroic group played a crucial role in protecting civilians, particularly women and children, from atrocities during the liberation of the Liri Valley in 1944.

En mai 2024, un tour culturel, éducatif et des champs de bataille d’une semaine a été organisé en Italie pour commémorer le 80e anniversaire de la Campagne d’Italie durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. The tour, running from May 12 to May 19, featured a series of commemorative ceremonies and visits to key historical sites of Canadian significance. One of the most poignant moments was the unveiling of a monument and plaque in Castro dei Volsci on May 14, 2024, honouring Captain Scotti and his company. This ceremony, attended by local dignitaries, residents, and school children, marked the heroic actions of the CProC in protecting the local population.

​Other significant stops included visits to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Cemetery in Cassino and the Moro River Canadian War Cemetery. At these sites, participants laid wreaths and poppies in remembrance of the 13 Canadian Provost Corps members who lost their lives during the Italian Campaign.

In addition to the commemorative events, the group visited historical battlefields and landmarks in cities such as Pontecorvo, Torrice, Campobasso, San Pietro Infine, Venafro, and Ortona. These visits brought to life the formidable challenges Canadian forces faced during their push through Italy.

Among the many highlights of the tour were meetings with survivors whose lives were saved by the Canadian soldiers. Participants met 94-year-old Olivetta Molinari, whose family was protected by CProC members during the chaos of war, and 86-year-old Gino Farnetti Bragaglia, an orphan rescued by Canadian troops. These personal encounters deeply moved the tour group and reinforced the human side of the CProC’s mission.​

​The CMPA played a vital role in making this tour possible by offering a generous donation of $9,222. This contribution helped cover various aspects of the event:

• $162 was used to offer discounted attendee orders of Kit Shop items.
• $3,500 was allocated to sponsor Roger Chabot, a well-known war artist, who attended the tour to document the events through sketches and photographs. Chabot’s work will result in a commissioned painting and a short documentary film about the tour, to be made available by the end of 2024.
• $1,500 went towards reducing the costs of the tour for CMPA members and their spouses who attended.
• $100 was used to purchase four 14-inch wreaths, which were laid at the gravesites of Canadian soldiers.
• $3,960 was dedicated to sponsoring two currently serving Military Police members, Captain Stephen Keeble and Sgt Paul Hare, who participated in the full tour in an official capacity, representing the Canadian Armed Forces.

​One of the most significant moments of the tour came during visits to the Moro River and Cassino War Cemeteries. The group paid tribute to the 13 CProC members who were killed during the Italian Campaign by laying poppies and wreaths on their graves. These solemn moments reminded everyone of the immense sacrifices made by these soldiers and the importance of preserving their memory.

“Participating in the events of 14 May 2024 was a profoundly humbling experience. Meeting Olivetta Molinari, who at 14 was just a young girl during the war and is now a remarkably lively 94-year-old woman, was a true highlight. Her presence brought a deeply personal connection to the history we were there to honour. The unveiling of a plaque in tribute to Captain Tony Scotti and his men was a powerful reminder of their bravery and sacrifice by protecting Olivetta’s village from savagery. The plaque’s location, just across the river from where the Canadians halted the Goumiers from committing further atrocities, was particularly moving—standing there, it was impossible not to imagine the dramatic events that took place in that very spot 80 years ago. 

« Participer aux événements du 14 mai 2024 a été une expérience profondément émouvante. Rencontrer Olivetta Molinari, qui à 14 ans n’était qu’une jeune fille pendant la guerre et qui est maintenant une femme remarquablement vive de 94 ans, a été un véritable point fort. ​Learning history from books pales in comparison to experiencing it firsthand, seeing the landscapes, and walking in the footsteps of those who lived it. Another unforgettable story was that of Gino, a young boy saved by Canadian troops after losing his parents in the war. The soldiers ensured his well-being, even after they had left the Italian theatre. Now a humble and appreciative older gentleman, Gino greeted us with a smile that spoke volumes about his enduring connection to the Canadian soldiers. Meeting people like Olivetta and Gino, and hearing their stories firsthand, brought the human side of history to life in a way I will never forget. This journey, visiting battle sites and hearing these personal accounts, greatly deepened my understanding of the crucial role the CProC played—not just in maintaining military order, but in safeguarding civilians amidst the chaos of war. It has also strengthened my appreciation for the immense sacrifices they made.

​“When I first became aware of the opportunity that the CMPA was sponsoring two deserving MP to participate in the Italy Tour being organized by Colonel Tony Battista (retired), I was immediately intrigued.

« Lorsque j’ai pris connaissance de l’opportunité offerte par l’APMC de parrainer deux membres de la Police militaire méritants pour participer au tour en Italie, organisé par le Colonel Tony Battista (retraité), j’ai immédiatement été intrigué. 

​​There were multiple reasons for my interest in submitting my name for consideration.  One reason is that my knowledge of Canada’s involvement in WW2 is primarily of the French Campaign and the Juno Beach landings, and other major events of that aspect of the war, such as the sacrifices of the Newfoundland soldiers at Beaumont-Hamel.

​Plusieurs raisons m’ont poussé à soumettre ma candidature. L’une d’entre elles est que ma connaissance de l’implication du Canada dans la Seconde Guerre mondiale portait principalement sur la campagne de France et les débarquements de Juno Beach, ainsi que sur d’autres événements majeurs de cet aspect de la guerre, comme les sacrifices des soldats de Terre-Neuve à Beaumont-Hamel.

I admit that I had very limited, and significantly less knowledge, of the Italian Campaign and was excited at the prospect of using this tour to broaden and expand my knowledge of Canada’s participation in the Italian campaign. I was thrilled to eventually learn that I had been chosen as I am a 20-year serving member of the MP Branch and take a tremendous amount of pride in the opportunities that the CF has afforded me and the friendships I’ve made with the fine man and women I have had the tremendous honour and privilege to serve with.  Any time that I can honour our heritage and history I am proud to do so, having volunteered and participated in several Honour Guard duties during ceremonies.  The fact that the tour would specifically focus on the accomplishments of the CProC and its members, who comprised the foundation of what would come to be the modern-day Military Police Branch, of which I am a part, was incredibly enticing.

​As much as I anticipated this trip (upon learning that of the very worthy candidates I had been selected to attend) my expectations were completely blown out of the water.  Once on the ground, and throughout the duration of the tour, I quickly appreciated the challenging obstacles that the landscape and complicated German defences would have caused for the Allies attempting to push through the Liri Valley, on the way to ​Rome and beyond.

​Attending both the Canadian and Commonwealth Cemeteries I was in awe at the meticulous attention, and precise care and dedication, that the CWGC and the Italian people have for their reverence and maintenance.  I can’t even put into words what it meant to be personally able to walk that ground and honour the soldiers that are buried there.

​I would have to say that the ceremony in Castro dei Vosci is one of the most vivid and impactful memories that I will take away from this experience.  Taking the arm of Olivetta Molinari and acting as her personal attendant during the unveiling of the monument to her saviour, Captain Tony Scotti, very near to the 80th  Anniversary of the actual liberation of that community in which she lived and still does to this day thanks to him, was truly a life altering experience and a very humbling event.  I will have memories of that day, and meeting her, that I will cherish and hold with me for the rest of my life.

I can’t thank enough Tony Battista, the CMPA, and the MP Branch for affording me the incredible experience, the memories, and the knowledge that this opportunity and trip have given me.

Je dois admettre que j’avais très peu de connaissances sur la Campagne d’Italie et j’étais enthousiaste à l’idée d’utiliser ce tour pour élargir et approfondir mes connaissances sur la participation du Canada à cette campagne. J’ai été ravi d’apprendre que j’avais été choisi, moi qui suis membre de la branche de la Police militaire depuis 20 ans et qui éprouve une grande fierté pour les opportunités que les Forces canadiennes m’ont offertes et les amitiés que j’ai nouées avec les hommes et les femmes remarquables avec lesquels j’ai eu l’honneur et le privilège de servir. Chaque fois que je peux honorer notre héritage et notre histoire, j’en suis fier, ayant offert mes services en tant que membre de la Garde d’honneur lors de plusieurs cérémonies. Autant j’avais de grandes attentes pour ce voyage, autant elles ont été totalement dépassées une fois sur place. Visiter les cimetières canadiens et du Commonwealth m’a laissé en admiration devant l’attention méticuleuse, les soins précis et la dévotion avec lesquels la CWGC et le peuple italien entretiennent ces lieux. Je n’arrive pas à exprimer avec des mots ce que cela signifiait pour moi de marcher personnellement sur ce sol et d’honorer les soldats qui y sont enterrés.

Je dirais que la cérémonie à Castro dei Volsci est l’un des souvenirs les plus vifs et marquants que je retiendrai de cette expérience. Prendre le bras d’Olivetta Molinari et agir en tant que son accompagnateur personnel lors du dévoilement du monument à son sauveur, le Capitaine Tony Scotti, tout près du 80e anniversaire de la libération de cette communauté où elle vivait et où elle vit encore aujourd’hui grâce à lui, a été une expérience qui a changé ma vie et un événement très humble. Je garderai des souvenirs de cette journée, et de ma rencontre avec elle, que je chérirai pour le reste de ma vie.

​“In a word our Italian Tour was absolutely “Brilliant” and the credit goes without hesitation to both Tony and Cammy Battista. I’ve been on several battlefield tours in my day but none have been so well organized, informative and complete as this one. All eventualities to the smallest details were addressed and embedded in the tour schedule that insured a smooth, well-executed plan from beginning to end (except for a certain couple that was at the wrong pickup point at the beginning of the tour. I’ll leave it at that! LOL)

« En un mot, notre tour en Italie a été absolument “brillant” et le mérite revient sans hésitation à Tony et Cammy Battista. J’ai participé à plusieurs tours des champs de bataille dans ma carrière, mais aucun n’a été aussi bien organisé, informatif et complet que celui-ci. Tous les détails, même les plus petits, ont été pris en compte dans le
programme du tour, ce qui a assuré un plan fluide et bien exécuté du début à la fin (sauf pour un couple qui s’était trompé de point de rendez-vous au début du tour. Je n’en dirai pas plus ! LOL)

I will admit that my knowledge of the Canadian War efforts during the Italian Campaign of 1944 was somewhat limited, so I prepared for our trip by reading a number of books on the subject to include Farley Mowat’s “And No Birds Sang” (twice) and Daniel G. Dancocks” D-Day Dodgers”. I also watched whatever YouTube had to offer on the subject. That along with the excellent guided tours and presentations that Tony arranged brought to life the grim realities of war and what Canadian Soldiers had to endure during their efforts to liberate a besieged and repressed Italian people. It also highlighted the plight and often heroic actions of local Italian civilians caught in the crossfires, some which we met during our travels.

Je dois admettre que ma connaissance des efforts de guerre du Canada pendant la Campagne d’Italie de 1944 était quelque peu limitée, alors je me suis préparé pour notre voyage en lisant plusieurs livres sur le sujet, dont And No Birds Sang de Farley Mowat (deux fois) et D-Day Dodgers de Daniel G. Dancocks. J’ai également regardé tout ce que YouTube avait à offrir sur le sujet. Ces lectures, combinées aux excellentes visites guidées et aux présentations organisées par Tony, ont donné vie aux dures réalités de la guerre et à ce que les soldats canadiens ont dû endurer dans leurs efforts pour libérer un peuple italien assiégé et réprimé. Elles ont également mis en lumière la situation des civils italiens, souvent héroïque, pris entre les feux, dont certains que nous avons rencontrés lors de nos déplacements.

​For me two events made our tour so memorable. The first was meeting and chatting with Gino Bragaglia. A wonderful, humble gentleman with an incredible past linking a small group of Canadian Soldiers to his survival during the War captured in the Docudrama “A Child of War”, and a book by the same title. Meeting Gino and some of the Canadian Soldiers’ family members that helped Gino during the War (that were part of our tour group) was a great experience for me. I had seen the film and read his book. An incredible story that should be compulsory reading in our schools and any Canadian War Studies Program.

Pour moi, deux événements ont rendu ce tour si mémorable. Le premier a été la rencontre et la conversation avec Gino Bragaglia. Un homme merveilleux, humble, avec un passé incroyable liant un petit groupe de soldats canadiens à sa survie pendant la guerre, capturé dans le docudrame  "A Child of War" et un livre du même titre. Rencontrer Gino et certains des membres de la famille des soldats canadiens qui ont aidé Gino pendant la guerre (et qui faisaient partie de notre groupe) a été une grande expérience pour moi. J’avais vu le film et lu son livre. Une histoire incroyable qui devrait être une lecture obligatoire dans nos écoles et dans tout programme d’études canadiennes sur la guerre.

​The second event was the ceremony unveiling a monument honoring Canadian Provost Corps Captain Tony Scotti and his men for their heroic actions in saving Italian mothers and daughters from being sexually assaulted and brutalized. Incredibly, one of these ladies was present at the ceremony.  This emotionally moving event was also attended by several local dignitaries, many local school children and what appeared to be the entire town of Castro Dei Volsci. Also in attendance were members of Tony Scotti’s immediate family. (Simply Amazing)

Le deuxième événement a été la cérémonie de dévoilement d’un monument en l’honneur du Capitaine Tony Scotti du Corps de prévôté canadien et de ses hommes pour leurs actions héroïques en sauvant des mères et des filles italiennes de viols et de brutalités. De manière incroyable, l’une de ces femmes était présente à la cérémonie. Cet événement émouvant a également été marqué par la présence de plusieurs dignitaires locaux, de nombreux écoliers locaux et de ce qui semblait être l’ensemble du village de Castro Dei Volsci. ​In closing I just want to thank the CMPA for providing funding, easing the cost for attending members. Thank you to Roger Chabot and his film production company Bravery in Arms for capturing our tour on film and finally of course Thank you Tony and Cammy for an amazing 7 day trip in Italy, one that will remain with me forever.

​“At 74 years old with health issues, I decided to follow Col Tony Battista (retired) on a trip to Italy with a bus load of MPs from Canada, and a group from the Canadian Embassy and Naples, with other veterans along with family members for the 80th Anniversary of the Canadian participation in the Italian Campaign.

​« À 74 ans, avec des problèmes de santé, j’ai décidé de suivre le Col Tony Battista (retraité) lors d’un voyage en Italie avec un bus chargé de membres de la Police militaire du Canada, ainsi qu’un groupe de l’ambassade canadienne à Naples, des vétérans et des membres de la famille pour le 80e anniversaire de la participation canadienne à la Campagne d’Italie.

Family members of CProC Captain Tony Scotti (CO of No. 5 Provost Company joined the tour for a day or two. Under Captain Scotti’s command. his company spread out in the small town of Castro dei Volsci where atrocities beyond our comprehension by colonial soldiers was found, taking direct action by protecting innocent women, elderly and children from the hands of their attackers even bringing them away to safety in other towns.

On 14 May 2024 our bus drove to the town of Castro dei Volsci, escorted by Polizia Municipale to the train station area where we were met by dignitaries, and our counterpart veterans of their Military Police. The large crowd gathered at the event were warm, friendly and very thankful for what our forefathers did even after such a long time had passed. During the poignant ceremony, a 16-year-old schoolgirl took to the microphone speaking only in her mother language   She spoke softly in the beginning, rising in tempo while expressing her ability to pass on information with her expressions, hand gestures and perhaps a bit of magic. Although I did not understand her words, I knew the story she spoke of almost word for word. Her story of that terrible time put tears in my eyes. I have never felt so proud of my country as then.

Le 14 mai 2024, notre bus est arrivé dans la ville de Castro dei Volsci, escorté par la Polizia Municipale jusqu’à la gare, où nous avons été accueillis par des dignitaires et nos homologues, les vétérans de la Police militaire italienne. Elle parlait doucement au début, augmentant son rythme tout en exprimant sa capacité à transmettre des informations avec ses expressions, ses gestes de la main et peut-être un peu de magie. Bien que je ne comprenais pas ses paroles, je connaissais presque mot pour mot l’histoire qu’elle racontait. Son récit de cette terrible époque m’a fait monter les larmes aux yeux. Je n’ai jamais été aussi fier de mon pays qu’à ce moment-là.

​Our trip finally ended at the Rome Airport where after a week together we all bonded much like soldiers do.

En plus des commémorations physiques et des visites des champs de bataille, le documentaire et le tableau commandés par l’APMC et réalisés par Roger Chabot garantiront que l’héritage de ce tour perdure.
