Retirement - CWO Tammy McComb PDF Print E-mail
Written by CWO Darcy Elder
Monday, 15 February 2010 12:04

CWO Tammy McComb will retire from the Canadian Forces on 9 May 2010 after 28 years of dedicated service to Canada and the Military Police Branch.

Tammy joined the Canadian Forces as a Military Policewoman in April 1982 at the ripe old age of 17. Immediately following her QL3 training she was posted to CFB Borden, Ontario. It was during this first posting that her passion for both policing and the military started to grow. Over the years she has been posted to CFB Lahr, Germany, Ottawa, Ontario, back to CFB Borden and then back again to Ottawa. She has worked as a patrolwoman, as an investigator, a surveillant, an instructor at the academy, a Company Sergeant Major, professional standards evaluator and investigator and finally, as the CANOSCOM OS MP GP CWO.

Despite all her earlier efforts to deploy, her first opportunity did not present itself until 1993 when, as part of a very small team she went to the former Republic of Yugoslavia to conduct war crime investigations. She returned to the fry in 1994, to conduct further investigations. In 1996 Tammy deployed to Bosnia where she worked with the allied multi- national intelligence battalion. In 1999, Tammy deployed to Macedonia as a member of the NCE HQ CFNIS Detachment and in 2008, deployed to Afghanistan as the MP Coy SM.

CWO McComb has decided that it is time to move on and hang up her combat boots. Immediately following her release she will return to school to obtain a certificate as a personal support worker. She will remain in the Ottawa area with her husband, CWO Darcy Elder, OS MP GO CWO (Designate).

A small retirement luncheon will be planned at a later date with details to follow. Anyone wishing to send congratulatory notes and anecdotes should forward them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by 1 Apr 2010.

The CMPA President, Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Bell, is pleased to announce the 2009 winners of the CMPA Scholarship awards. The Scholarship Programme is intended to provide financial assistance to members of the CMPA whose family members are pursuing their first year of post secondary education. The Junior and Senior NCO MP of the Year 2009 selection board convened earlier this week and after reviewing many files and much deliberation (including two tie breakers) two recipients were selected.

It is with great pleasure that I announce:

  • the Junior MP of the Year for 2009 is Master Corporal Stephane Charbonneau from 3 Wing Bagotville; and
  • the Senior MP of the Year is Sergeant Martin Provost from the CFNIS SD.

Congratulations to them both.

CWO Day and I are delighted with the selection process that has identified these two outstanding individuals. The MP Of the Year 2009 will be presented to MCpl Charbonneau and Sgt Provost at the CFPM Mess Dinner to be held on 4 February 2010 in Ottawa ON.

Please pass this information on to all and send congratulatory remarks to the recipients.

Did You Know?

The Thunderbird is the symbol of the Military Police. It is a uniquely Canadian icon that originated from a legend of the West Coast Indians. The Tlingit, Salish, Nisqa'a and Haida are some of the more well known tribes. The legend goes that a giant killer whale, Orca, was eating all the salmon and the people were starving. The elders summoned Thunderbird to help them. Thunderbird seized Orca and carrying him far off into the Pacific Ocean. When Thunderbird returned, he asked the elders how they would honour him. Thunderbird and the elders agreed that Thunderbird would keep Orca away and the elders would honour him by putting his likeness at the top of their totem poles, ever vigilant for Orca. Thunderbird is a symbol of vigilance and watchfulness, important attributes of the Canadian Forces Military Police.
